Nobody disputes Tasmania's uniqueness, beauty and many wondrous treasures. From coast to coast Tasmania is a complete package with its ancient forests, pristine rivers, lakes and beaches, wildlife, lofty mountain ranges, quaint colonial villages/towns, picturesque rural scenery, gourmet food/wines and BOWERBANK MILL. Now the secret is out. A famous landmark in the heartland of the North, Bowerbank Mill with its majestic Georgian façade and impressive towering six storey chimney, is a traffic stopper, being one of the most photographed privately owned buildings in Northern Tasmania.

In 1853 near the village of Deloraine in the hauntingly beautiful Meander Valley, an enterprising widow, Mrs. Mary Ann Horne, built a corn Mill on Bowerbank, her fertile country estate, to provide flour (the staple food of the day) for the settlers of the Colony. The Mill has had a checkered and interesting history. It cost the widow Horne a vast sum to build since cheap convict labour had ceased and the able bodied men of Van Diemens's Land (the original name for Tasmania) had downed their farming, building and logging tools and rushed to the Ballarat Gold Fields to make their fortunes. The building functioned as a flour mill until 1935 and from then on it fell into decline being used as a hay barn, service station and youth hostel, until purchased in the early 1970's by Leather Artist, Garry Greenwood who had the vision to start restoration and create an Art & Craft Gallery.

Today Bowerbank Mill has had further careful restoration with reverence for the buildings original function and age of 170 years. The Mill is another fine example of one of Tasmania's treasures preserved for future generations and stands as a reminder of a by-gone era. However, Bowerbank Mill is more than a National Trust icon and offers a Fine Art Gallery/Gift Shop and for the discerning traveller the most delightful world class heritage Accommodation. "Overwhelming! So wonderful to see such respect and love for beauty, both with the building and furnishing. Very gracious Mill and owners. Very, very special", praised Anthony from Queensland.

STOP the clock! On entering Bowerbank Mill and Fine Art Gallery you leave the hecticness behind and experience the 'olde worlde' rustic charm of this 1853 Mill. The chugging and clanging, bustle and sweat of a working flour mill has ceased, but previous and current owners, JD and Anne, (your hosts) have maintained an authenticity in the ancient bones of the building
— meter thick bluestone and handmade brick walls, massive pit-sawn eucalypt beams, log fire in the gigantic six storey chimney, original stairs and slate roof, arched windows and doors, blackwood and cedar panelling, grinding stones (imported from France) and more. Guests are invited to join the complimentary historic Mill tour and discover a trove of treasures and evocative tales of a bygone era. "This place is absolutely incredible! Thank you for a phenomenal time in a stunning location! The assortment of antiques combined with the architecture has made this a great experience"; exclaimed guests who observed the 'wow' factor.
Add to this a poetic blend of tasteful décor in period antiques, personal 'objets d'art', plus a touch of today's luxury, elegance and modern comforts — all a wonderful recipe to allow guests to slow down, relax, breathe the fresh country air, enjoy the welcoming atmosphere and old fashioned hospitality. "This place is a treasure of history, the atmosphere here is so relaxing & inviting, thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality" and "Steeped in history. 11 out of 10. Congratulations! "; wrote contented guests.
